In the years following the first film, there were many attempts to write a sequel

Synopsis

When his home is conquered by the tyrannical emperors who now rule Rome, Lucius is forced to enter the Colosseum and must look to his past to find the strength to restore Rome’s glory to its people. Musician Nick Cave was brought in to write a version by Russell Crowe and Sir Ridley Scott. His version focused on the more mythical elements of Ancient Rome and would have seen Maximus arrive in the afterlife, only to encounter other souls who have yet to ascend further.

The film would have ended with Maximus being cursed to live forever

Eventually, Jupiter and the other Roman deities order him to return to earth to find and kill Hephaestus, the former deity who betrayed them. From there, he is resurrected as a Christian and returns to Rome on a mission to stop the spread of Christianity, while also clashing with the new emperor Lucius. It would have included a montage of soldiers fighting through the Crusades, World War II, and the Vietnam War, eventually revealing a modern-day Maximus working at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

DeMille on steroids

It’s Cecil B. He’s huge, loud, and I really found him hilarious. Meanwhile, Russell Crowe’s Maximus in Gladiator; born from greatness, the main character, played intensely by Paul Mescal, becomes greatness as the film progresses.

There are some impressive set pieces throughout the run time, and I have to say that Ridley Scott really redeems himself here after last year’s inconsistent silliness in Napoleon. The real sets (made in both Malta and Morocco) looked truly impressive and provide an immersion that CGI can’t, although CGI was definitely used in a few scenes, either to add layers or to create sharks (!) Except that Mescal doesn’t have as much weight and screen space as Crowe does as Maximus, and that he only had Hans Zimmer’s vibe, not actual music. I walked away thinking that this was probably the best time I’ve had at the cinema this year.
